Drizzy Drake - Club Paradise Tour - Birmingham 19th & 20th April

Welcome to Club Paradise...

It finally arrived... After months of hearing about other parts of the world having the Club Paradise experience it was finally my turn and I was lucky enough to be seeing it twice! Well not lucky just extra dedicated - anyway this is how it went down...

First off he was supported by Labrinth who tore it up note perfect as well as playing guitar riffs and working his magic to get the crowd hyped. On the second night the audience were not as receptive for some reason but the first night everyone felt the vibe.

Lab supporting Drake 19.04.12
Drake's official tour DJ Future The Prince also did a set on the 20th; busting out jam after jam. Every artist should always allow their DJ to do a set as a warm up, I've said it about every show I have ever been to! He didn't do a set the night before, which I can say in retrospect we would have loved! Remember that for next time guys!

The arena began to fill out almost immediately - even those in seated had arrived early! By 8pm there wasn't an empty space in sight. Having seen Drake right from his first time here supporting Jay-Z on tour back in 2010 I was shocked myself at how fast he has gone to filling the same arena 2 days in a row, for 30,000 fans.

After the time consuming set up of the stage everyone was getting more and more tense - gaps started closing up in the crowd, toilet breaks had stopped and anyone that was trying to get past and "meet their friends" were getting told a point blank NO.

And then he arrived.

Bursting on with Lord Knows and the crowd going absolutely mental, he literally bounced across the stage, flowing straight after into one of my favourites from the Takecare album Underground Kings. (Sorry for the slight lack of control filming this one, the atmosphere was insane I couldn't help but get involved).
He continued to hit out track after track without giving you time to recover from the last one, keeping the energy at a constant optimum the whole time. It also brought attention to how many hits he has made in such a short period; the realisation seemed to hit the crowd every time we heard the opening bars of the next tune!

Drake spotting me in the crowd...ahem
Something I felt that was particularly special was his mention of what it meant for him to play in Birmingham - as I mentioned earlier the first time I had seen Drake live was when he supported Jay-Z 2 years ago, which he humbly remembers and repeatedly thanked the audience on both nights, for being one of the first places in the UK to show him love. (And last year on his Thank Me Later tour he was performing at small venues only, but sold out his first arena ever which was in Birmingham too. Just saying.)

The show continued with an explosive performance of Takecare of which I captured some great footage that you can catch in the video below. His hyper energy catches him off balance at one point and he falls on stage but completely styles it out into a backward roll; so much so it almost looked like part of his routine - smooth move Drizzy!

He also took liberty at shouting out members of the audience which he spent a lot of time on - almost ten minutes - individually picking out people in the crowd and free-styling some into a rap and the hook from Make It Sound SweetOnce everyone was buzzing off getting their shout out (or in some cases lifting their tops up in desperate last attempts of getting noticed for a shout out) he went on to play the last 3 bangers: Motto, HYFR and ending with Headlines. The atmosphere was euphoric by this point; the band were going crazy, audience were going crazy, he was going crazy - it was like an infectious buzz where everyone was high off his energy and then after saying his goodbyes he ended with the line "Until next time...TAKECARE!!"

He is in the UK for the rest of this week to finish the European leg of the tour before taking Club Paradise back to the States. So there you have it!
It's been great having you Mr Graham, enjoy the rest of the UK and come back soon!

Delilah gig review, HMV Institute, Birmingham 18.04.12

Amy Winehouse meets Adele

It's been a busy week - 3 gigs in 3 days (and now a crippled back from standing) but some great music along the way!

First up is Delilah; if you're new to her then congratulations! You are just about to discover one of the best up and coming British artists out here right now. Born in Paris, raised in London and heritage from many different nationalities, her music fuses all of these cultures together.

HMV Institute, Birmingham
The gig kicked off with support act Josh Kumra - perfect choice of support. He came on performing the original version of Don't Go which you will know better as the single Wretch 32 re-worked, resulting in a number 1 for the two of them last year. The acoustic is beautiful; I made a clip of the performance which you can view here

Delilah later enters the stage dressed down but delivering a vocal performance of the highest class. Song after song she hit every note to the delight of an extremely receptive crowd, to which she smiled shyly as if almost surprised by her own talent.

One song in particular that impressed me was Cinnababy. She stated it was a song she had written at the age of 14 after an argument between her and her mum who was eating a cinnamon pastry at the time and shouting at her in-between mouthfuls it strangely inspired her to write this beautiful song! Just her and a few piano chords (which she plays herself) showed off the wonderful quality to her dreamy vocals which you can get a listen of here.

As the show continued I found myself seeing flickers of Amy Winehouse in her; admittedly her appearance is slightly reminiscent of Amy i.e. the tattoo's on her arm, dark features etc and then at times I heard snippets of her vocals being similar to that of Adele, but then she would break off into her own shivery hues which define her from any other artist out there.

She went on to sing her latest single
Breathe after Inside Your Love and Love You So and finished with an encore performance of Go. The last note of her voice lingered on the air leaving everybody humming the "oooh's" of Go as we entered the street.

So all in all an absolutely fantastic gig, and I feel it's safe to say everyone that attended left feeling extremely excited for her album From The Roots Up due for release some time this summer. She is an absolute credit to the British music scene, I look forward to seeing her perform again at BBC Radio 1xtra's Hackney Weekend!

Beyonce Skypes the winner of 'End of Time' remix competition!

Poland native Jimek bags $4000 USD and the video call of a lifetime...

Back in February, Beyoncé set up a competition for fans and the general public alike to create a remix for her (amazing) track 'End of Time'.

Remixes came flooding in and now a winner has eventually been chosen - and then she casually called him on Skype to congratulate him!!

Well done Jimek, very much deserved and B if you want to call me I have Skype too...

John Legend - Ordinary People

Number 3 on iTunes after contestant's performance on The Voice

So new talent reality show The Voice on BBC 1 has already been deemed better than X Factor and rightly so - I really don't understand why the public find watching the obviously shit people so entertaining - so automatically The Voice has gone to the top of league for me as we get to watch real talent from the start.

If you didn't watch it last Saturday you need to catch Jaz Ellington's rendition of John Legend's 'Ordinary People'. It's important to note that he had actually done his audition prior to this - this was entirely to show mentor Will.I.Am that he had a winner on his team; it will absolutely blow you away. You can catch it here:

It also encouraged me to fish out all my videos that I had made from seeing John Legend on tour a few years ago and play his albums back to back; reminded me what a completely timeless artist he is.

Good luck Jaz and go #TEAMWILL!

Fake videos on YouTube

Not so bad this time...

I sat down earlier to start writing my blog entry for the J.Cole video and opened up YouTube to get the link for 'Sideline Story'. It came up straight away with what looked like a link for the Official Video but turned out to be that familiar situation of it being something completely different... I was just about to start my angry rant at how annoying people are when they post random videos under different names until I read the comment the guy had left underneath:

"I KNOW SOME OF YALL GONNA GET MAD AND HATE BECAUSE OF THE TITLE BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS IM GOING TO DO WATEVA IT TAKES TO MAKE IT! DIDNT BIG SEAN LIE TO MEET KANYE WEST? DIDNT LUDACRIS LIE AND SAID HE WORKED AT A RADIO STATION TO GET HIS SONG PLAYED? DIDNT DESTINY'S CHILD & THE JACKSON 5 LIE ABOUT THERE AGE TO PLAY IN FRONT OF AN OLDER AUDIENCE? DONT PRESIDENTS LIE TO YOU TO GET YOUR VOTE? THE POINT IS IF YOU FEEL LIKE U HAVE THE TALENT YOUR GONNA DO WATEVA IT TAKES TO BE SUCCESSFUL!!!!!"

Not that I condone the whole lying concept but the dude has got a point. Still, I wasn't impressed enough to actually watch it but just as I was about to close the page down the video started... and he's not bad!! In my years of using YouTube I have never been even remotely impressed by one of those videos, but this time I have to admit I sat and watched it all the way through.

So I'm going to do my good deed for the day and post it on my blog :)

Introducing Yung Jules...

VIDEO: J.COLE - Sideline Story

He ain't on the sidelines no more...

Throw your diamonds up!!! My boy J.Cole is here with another treat for us! Less than a month ago since the release of his last video 'Nobody’s Perfect', we are given the video for ‘Sideline Story’.
I am PSYCHED my favourite track on the album has got a video to it – and even more excited at the fact that the entire video is full of clips of him during his European tour (half of which I was on – I should be in this damn video!) and even Tinie Tempah gets a cheeky feature in it as J supported him on his UK arena tour last year.

Cole and Tinie catchin' joookes!
J.Cole has brought that excitement back to hip-hop; I'm not saying the game was dead before he arrived but there wasn't enough emphasis on lyrical content or word play and J has proved he is right up there on both counts, as well as being able to produce the sickest beats too.
Supporting Drake again (stateside) on his Club Paradise Tour this Spring, J.Cole is still busy being a roadie, but he's already working on new tracks for the next album.
Can't wait!

Favourite lyric in this track:
Money comes fast so being hungry don't last/ Till you look in the mirror and you saw who you was

HYFR!

As you also know Drake dropped the video for 'HYFR' at the same time as 'Takecare' and it's basically a great big party that you're gonna wish you were invited to.

However I thought I would just pick out the best bit for you...

Now THAT is the personification of HYFR! Enjoy the rest of your weekend ;-)
